How do I explain this to my daughter?

Mrs. Washington gives a total of $20 to Charlie and Isaac. If Isaac gets 4 times as much as Charlie, how much does Charlie get?

He's saying that if X equals what Charlie gets, then what he gets, plus 4 times the amount he gets equals twenty. So you would use the same variable, X, instead of using X for Charlie and, say, Y for Isaac.

So X plus 4X equals 20.  So then, that's 5X = 20.  Then, divide both sides by 5 in order to isolate the X.  So X = 4.

Charlie gets 4 lousy dollars, while Isaac gets 16.  What a gip.  haha
