Let x = the amount that Charlie gets. Isaac gets 4 times as much, so he gets 4x. It all adds up to $20.

5x = $20

So Charlie gets $4. Isaac gets 4x = 4·($4) = $16.

He's saying that if X equals what Charlie gets, then what he gets, plus 4 times the amount he gets equals twenty. So you would use the same variable, X, instead of using X for Charlie and, say, Y for Isaac.
So X plus 4X equals 20. So then, that's 5X = 20. Then, divide both sides by 5 in order to isolate the X. So X = 4.
Charlie gets 4 lousy dollars, while Isaac gets 16. What a gip. haha
