Energy does recycle through an ecosystem.  However, some energy is lost on each cycle to waste and heat, so the amount of energy becomes smaller and smaller with each cycle and will eventually all be lost.  To maintain a steady energy state, new energy must be injected into the ecosystem.  Typically, new energy comes in the form of sunlight which allows a new generation of plants to grow and flourish.
