b. The Marauders fooseball team is improving with each game. The first game they scored no points, but the second game they scored some goals. In their third game they scored 8 more points than the second. Now in their last game they scored three times as many points as their third. Altogether they scored 117 points!!! How many points did the Marauders score in the third game?

Let p = number of points

 

The team played 4 games and ended up with a total of 117 points. Hence,

 

Game 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 117

 

Game 1 = 0 points

Game 2 = some points, let this value = p

Game 3 = p + 8

Game 4 = 3 (p + 8)

 

0 + p + (p + 8) + 3(p + 8) = 117

 

0 + p + p + 8 + 3p + 24 = 117

 

5p + 24 = 117

 

5p = 85

 

p = 17

 

# of points scored in the 3rd game is p + 8 = 17 + 8 = 25.
