Amy:
Why do you need an equation, when it is NOT necessary? But for your sake, I will make one up.
Let t be the number of tires Patrick purchased. The sale price per tire is $94.99 - $20.00 = $74.99. The cost of t tires is (74.99) t dollars. If the sales tax is 6%, that is an additional [(74.99)t](0.06) dollars. The total to be charged on the Visa card is
(74.99) t + [(74.99)t](0.06) = (74.99) (1.06) t dollars.
The above is your equation. If Patrick purchased 4 tires, he substitutes t = 4, and gets
(74.99)(1.06)(4) = 317.96 dollars.
Amy, there was no need for an equation. You could have directly multiplied 4 by 74.99, to get the cost before tax and multiplied that number to get cost will tax added. You will have gotten the same answer.
