We see that each piece has the variable w. Since they are like terms (i.e. it is the same variable), we can combine them. So, 8w-6w+w simplifies to 2w+w (because 8w-6w = 2w). We can simplify further: 2w+w = 3w.
If one piece did not have the variable, then we could not simplify further. For example, 8w-6w+w+2 would simplify to 3w+2. Hope this helps!
