Word problem help please?

you walK half a mile in one tenth of an hour. How many miles did you walk in an hour? Be sure to include the units in your work.

setting up 2 ratios is one way to work this problem

 

(1/2)/(1/10) = x/1     or you can use decimals if you prefer  (.5)/(.1) = x/1

 

 

This equation just states that if she can walk 1/2 mile in one tenth of an hour, how far can she walk in 1 entire hour

 

cross multiply

 

(1/10)x = 1/2

 

multiply both sides by 10

 

x = 5 miles/hour
