Stacey is selling tickets to the school play. The tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. She sells twice as many adult tickets as children's tickets and brings in a total of $220. How many of each kind of ticket did she sell?

y = children's tickets

 

you'll have 2 equations with 2 unknowns and will use substitution to solve

 

x = 2y

 

8x + 4y = 220

 

substitue for x

 

8(2y) + 4y = 220

 

16y + 4y = 220

 

20y = 220

 

y = 11

 

11 children's tickets which brings in $44

 

x = 22

 

22 adult tickets which brings in $176
