volume of a cylinder

A caterer wants to have cylinder water glasses completely full, including three ice cubes. The water is going to be poured first and the ice cubes added once the glasses are on the table. The diameter of the water glass is 3 in and the height is 6 in. The ice cubes are perfect cubes with side lengths of 1.5 in. What volume of water needs to be added so that adding the ice cubes completely fills each glass? 

 

The formula is  Volume= πpie x radius² x height

Hi Seni,

 

The radius is half the diameter so it equals 1.5 inches

 

Volume of the glass = pi·(1.5)² ·6

 

Volume of the glass = 13.5 pi  in³

 

=  approximately 42.412 in³

 

The volume of 3 ice cubes is 3 times LxWxH

 

volume of ice cubes = 3·(1.5)³

 

volume of ice cubes = 10.125 in³

 

volume of water needed = 42.412 -10.125

 

volume of water needed = 32.287 in³

 

NOTE: it's important to know if you should you use the pi key on your calculator (which is what I did) or use 3.14

 

Using 3.14 gives you an answer of 32.265 in²

 

(Hopefully this won't be comfusing. Be sure your answer is not supposed to be in ml. That would have to be converted.)
