Distance Rate Time Problem

Question

Flying against the wind, a jet travels 5810 miles
in 7 hours. Flying with the wind, the same jet travels 3510 miles
in 3 hours. What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

With the wind, the speed of the wind is added to the the jet's speed, and vice versa.

 

7(j - w) = 5810

3(j+ w) = 3510

 

j - w = 830

j + w = 1170

 

2j = 2000

j = 1000

 

w = 1170 - 1000

w = 170
