Let g = Garth's earnings

 

s + g = 425   {equation 1}

g = s + 25     {equation 2}

 

Using substitution replace g with s+25 in equation 1

and solve for s to determine how much Sandi earned.

 

s + s + 25 = 425

2s + 25 = 425

2s = 400

s = 200

 

g= s+25 = 225

 

Sandi earned $200

Garth earned $225
