Question

The Allen family and the Martin family each used their sprinklers last summer. The water output rate for the Allen family's sprinkler was 25L per hour. The water output rate for the Martin family's sprinkler was 30L per hour. The families used their sprinklers for a combined total of 55 hours, resulting in a total water output of 1525L, How long was each sprinkler used?

 

Allen sprinkler:   Hours

 

Martin sprinkler:   Hours

25a + 30m = 1535

 

a = 55 - m 

25(55 - m) + 30m = 1535

1375 - 25m + 30m = 1535

5m = 160

m = 32

 

a = 55 - 32

a = 23
