This will sound like sarcasm, but I mean it literally: you need to input energy because you want a higher energy. Whether you seek a higher kinetic, potential or other energy, you must add energy to the system. It comes back to the principle of conservation of matter and energy: matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but may be changed into another form.
