I love math, and I love to teach it.
Hello, Swarthi,
With such a problem, it is a good idea to underline or highlight the key words and numbers.
Let me give you an identical problem to the one you gave:
total=18 boys and girls 2x x smaller number
There are 18 students in the Art Club. Twice as many girls as boys are in the
solve for "x."
Club. How many boys are in the Club?
Setting up the equation: Total=boys +girls
18=x + 2x=3x Note: x=1x Collect like terms by adding numbers and "x's" together. 18=3x
Now, divide both sides equation by number next to "x," which is "3."
18/3 =(3/3) x 6 boys=x Therefore, 2x=2(6)=12 girls
This problem can be checked by substituting the values found into the original equation: 18=6 + 12
18=18 Check (correct problem.) Just do your problem like the example I just gave you, and you will find your answers. Susan C.
