Fruit word problem (see description)

Question

Kathleen wants to make 50 pounds of snack mix that she will sell for 6 dollars a pound in her health food store. She is using granola that sells for 4 dollars a pound and fruit that sells for 9 dollars a poundUsing these prices, how many pounds of fruit should she buy?

Let F = pounds of fruit and G = pounds of granola

F + G = 50

9F + 4G = 6(F + G)

 

Multiply and collect terms in the second equation to get: 3F = 4G = F = (2/3)G

 

Substitute in the first equation: (2/3)G + G = 150 => 2G + 3G = 150 => G = 30 and F = 20
