How does one know that an irrational number has no pattern if it continues forever, such as pi?

I want to know how someone can know there is no pattern with a number that continues forever.

A rational number is the ratio of two integers, and it must terminate, or repeat, in its decimal representatlon.

 

Irrational numbers can be PROVEN to not be representable as the ratio of two integers.

 

Pi, and also the number "e" are actually TRANSCENDENTAL numbers but it is true that they are not rational.
