Michael drove from his house in Winnipeg to his summer cottage at 75km/hr and returned at 60km/hr if the total trip took 12 hours, how far is it from his summer cottage to his home?

d = rt    distance = rate*time

 

To cottage:  d = 75t

To home:    d = 60(12-t)

Noting that the distance was the same in both instances:

 

75t = 60(12-t)

75t = 720 - 60t

135t = 720

t = 720/135

t = 5 1/3

 

d = 75t = 75(5 1/3) = 75(16/3) = 25(16) = 400 miles
