The Westminster Widget Company has an old machine that can produce 24 widgets in three hours. Now they have purchased a new machine that can produce 48 widgets in four hours. Working together, how long will it take the two machines to produce 120 widgets

The old machine can produce 8 widgets per hour, 24/3 = 8

 

The new machine can produce 12 widgets per hour, 48/4 = 12.

 

Working together, both machines will produce 20 widgets per hour.

 

120 widgets divided by 20 widgets per hour = 120/20 = 6 hours
