In order to sell a pair of really ugly shoes, a store decided to take 20% off the previous week’s price each Monday. After three reductions, they finally sold the shoes for 12.80. What was the original price?

Reducing the price by 20% means that 100% - 20% = 80% of the price remains intact.

 

80% of 80% of 80% 0F  X = 12.80

 

But 80% = 0.8

 

 So the equation becomes  0.8 * 0.8 * 0.8 * X = 12.80

 

                                          0.512 X = 12.80

 

                                          512 X = 12800

 

                                             X  = 12800 / 512

                                              

                                             X = 25

 

So the ugly shoes originally were priced at $25.

 After the 1st week, the price was lowered to 0.8 * 25 = 20

 After the 2nd week, the price was lowered to 0.8 *20 = 16

 After the 3rd week, the price was lowered to 0.8 * 16 = 12.80
