Let x = the number, then 4 less than the number is x-4, and 4 times the sum of the number +2 is 4(x+2)

 

Setting these two expression equal to each other:

 

x-4 = 4(x+2)

 

x-4 = 4x+8

 

-3x = 12 ⇒ x = -4
