b + c = 21000 (The pair is left $21000)

b = 2c - 3000 (The amount Bonnie gets is 3000 less than twice Claire's share)

 

We have a value for b, so let's plug it in:

(2c - 3000) + c = 21000

Simplify:

3c - 3000 = 21000

Add 3000:

3c = 24000

Divide by 3:

c = 8000
