Let b = cost of blueberry pies
Let m = cost of lemon meringue pies
Jack sold 7 blueberry and 5 lemon meringue pies for a total of $181:
7b + 5m = 181 {equation 1}
Jessica sold 14 blueberry and 3 lemon meringue pies for a total of $236:
14b + 3m = 236 {equation 2}
Let's use elimination. If we multiply equation 1 through by -2 and add to
equation 2 we eliminate the variable b.
-14b - 10m = -362 {2(equation 1)}
14b + 3m = 236 {equation 2}
-----------------------
-7m = -126
m = 18 lemon meringue pies cost $18
Plug 18 in for m in either of the original equations and solve for b
to find cost a blueberry pie.
