Let the numbers be a & b. Average:  (a+b)/2 = 7  so a+b = 14.

Difference: a-b = 6.

By adding these two equations, we get 2a = 20 so a = 10.  Now you can substitute ten for a, and find that b=4.

With a problem like this you need to read carefully.  The first math term you run into is average.  Average is what you get when you add things together and divide by the number of those things you have.  So you have two things, two numbers, x and y, that you add together to get x + y.  Now to get the average, you have to divide by the number of items, which is two.  So our first equation is

1.   (x+y)/2 = 7

 

The second equation is simpler, the difference, which is the answer when you subtract.

2.  x - y = 14

 

Multiply both sides of the first equation by 2, which gives us

1.  x + y = 14

2.  x - y   =  6 

 

Add the equations; you can take it from here.
