Read problems like this slowly, and translate them into math.

Ling will collect a total number of cards Y equal to 50 cards to start with + 5X where x is the number of months, or

Y = 50 + 5x

 

Jonathan will have Y cards starting with 90 but he sells 5 per month, so his count will go down, or

Y = 90 - 5x

 

Usually your question will want you to solve for the number of months when Y is the same?  Or something else?
