This translates to the equation 2^-1 * x = (-6)^-1. The -1 power is a special case of all negative exponents. It specifically just takes the reciprocal of whatever is being raised to that power. For example, 5^-1 =1/5 (2/7)^ -1 = 7/2 so 2^-1 =1/2 and (-6)^-1 = 1/(-6) = -1/6. Your equation becomes 1/2 *x = -1/6. Divide both sides by 1/2 ,the same as multiplying by 2 and get x = -1/6 * 2/1 = -1/3.
