In this situation both the kinetic and potential energy have increased. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion, therefore as the temperature is increased, the energy of motion is also increased. Potential energy is the ability for a material to do work. potential energy increases are primarily done during phase changes from Solid to liquid and from liquid to gas, which has happened in this case.
