How many cars were used? (re)

A car dealership makes $191,000, used cars were sold for $7000 and new cars were sold for $16,000, a total of 17 cars were sold.

How many used cars were sold?

So this is how I tried to solve it:

x = 7
y = 16
17 - y = x

7x + 16y = 191
7(17-y) + 16y = 191
119 - 191 = 72
7 = 72
y = 10.2 (?) (I divided 72 by 7 here and got 10.2)
10.2 - 17 = 6.8
x = 6.8

used cars = 6.8 (??)

Obviously im doing something wrong here, can someone please help?

EDIT: Well I can't comment and reply back to you Andrew so this is my only way of communication. I want to say thank you very much, I understand it now. Thank you very much for your insight and help!

Not exactly,

"119 - 7n + 16n = 191
119 + 9n = 191"

how did you get 9n in that equation?

what i did was with: "7(17-n) + 16n = 191"

I multiplied 7 with 17 with equals to 119 obviously, so i get that part...i dont get: "119 - 7n + 16n = 191" why you put 7n in there when 7n was replaced with with 119?

And: "119 + 9n = 191"
where the hell did you get 9 from? And where did the 7n go?

I assume you understood how we got
u = 17-n
from the fact that the total cars sold was 17
This was then substituted into
7u + 16n = 191
This gives the equation:
7(17-n) + 16n = 191

Distribute the 7 through the parenthesis:

7(17) + 7(-n) + 16n = 191
119 - 7n + 16n = 191
combine like terms ... -7n + 16n
119 + 9n = 191
subtract 119 from both sides
9n = 191 - 119
9n = 72
divide both sides by 9
n = 8 new cars sold

Distributing:  a(b+c) = a(b) + a(c)

7(17-n) = 7(17) + 7(-n) = 119 - 7n

Ohhhhhhhh ok now i get it!

So its:

u = 7
n = 16
17-y = x

7x + 16n = 191
7(17-n) + 16y = 191 (7 x 17 = 119)
119 - 7n + 16n = 191 (7 - 16 = 9)
119 + 9n = 191
9n = 72 (119 - 191)
n = 8 (9 / 72)
8 - 17 = 9
u = 9

Thank you so much for your help Andrew!
