In the metric system and also in our system of weights and measures, volume is expressed in terms of cubic units. It doesn't matter that you are measuring the volume of a liquid. You use what is called a liter, a convenient unit for measuring liquids. One liter is equal to 1000 cubic centimeters or written as 1000 cm3. Therefore 500 cm3 is one-half of a liter or written as 0.5 L.
