Blending spices

Question

spice of life sells ground sumac for $1.35 per ounce and ground thyme for $1.85 Per ounce. Aman wants to make a 20 oz Zahtar seasoning blend using the two spices that sells for $1.65 per ounce. How much of each spice should Aman use?

Let x = the number of ounces of ground sumac

Let y = the number of ounces of ground thyme

x + y = 20        x = 20 - y

1.35x + 1.85y = 20(1.65) = 33     Multiply this equation by 100.

135x + 185y = 3300

135(20 - y) + 185y = 3300

2700 - 135y + 185y = 3300

50y = 600

y = 12 ounces

x = 20 - 12

y = 8 ounces
