Question

u + n = 17
7000u + 16000n = 191000

From 1st equation u = 17 - n
Substitute into 2nd equation and solve for n

7000(17-n) + 16000n = 191000
119000 - 7000n + 16000n = 191000
23000n + 119000 = 191000

can someone please explain how you get 119000 and the 23000 out of those equations?

It looks like you made an error between your 2nd to last and your last lines of math.

 

Assuming there are no typos, in your last line, it looks like you accidentally added 7000n instead of subtracting 7000n to 16000n. Thus, you should get 9000n instead of 23000n. I have written the new equation below:

 

9000n + 119000 = 191000

 

I would also suggest dividing both sides by 1000 because it's much easier to work with smaller numbers as shown below:

 

9n + 119 = 191

 

Subtract both sides by 119 to get 9n by itself:

 

9n = 72
