it takes the appealing fruit company about 16 hours to peel,box,and ship 500 cartons of applesa how many carton can they box and ship in 2 days

     This problem can be set up as a proportion problem.  Hours   = hours

                                                                                   cartons    cartons

The question is the following:  How many cartons can they box and ship in 2 days?   Since everything is in hours, convert the 2 days to hours.                  1 hour= 24 hours     2hours=48 hours

 

Set up the proportion as above:     16 hours       =         48 hours                 Let x= number of cartons

                                                   500 cartons               x

Then solve for x by cross multiplying:

 

                                                 16x =  500(48)               

                                                 16x = 24,000  Now divide by number next to x, and you are done.
