Solve a system of equations using elimination: word problems

Dover Photography Studio is taking graduation portraits for students at local schools. Eighth graders from Dover Elementary School ordered 92 basic portrait packages and 56 deluxe portrait packages, for a total of $10,812. The seniors at Weston High ordered 92 basic portrait packages and 92 deluxe portrait packages, for a total of $13,800. How much does each type of package cost?

Let  x  be the number of basic packages, y the number of deluxe packages. Then

 

92x+56y-10 812

92x+92y=13 800

 

If you solve this simple system of  equations (I think you can!), you get x=67
