A constant (fixed number) multiplied by one or more variables. The variables can be to any power or degree.
The constant can be 1.
The exponents can be zero or positive.
Ex. 3x
2 x y^2
4 x^2 y^3
5 x y^2 z^3 a^4 b^2 c^5
7 <---- yes it is technically a monomial. Any vars have exponent zero.
abcxyz <---- the constant coefficient is 1 (not there), and all exponents are 1
Two monomials added together make a BInomial.
Three monomials added together make a TRInomial.
4 or more monomials added together make a POLYnomial.
Now do you understand?
