Three sisters: Jane, Keri, and Alice purchase a purebred riding horse. If Jane paid for one-fourth of the price of the horse, Keri paid 400 more than Jane, and Alice paid 400 more than Keri, what was the price of the horse?

Jane paid p/4

Keri paid p/4 + 400

Alice paid (p/4 + 400) + 400 = p/4 + 800

 

p = p/4 + (p/4 + 400) + (p/4 + 800)

 

p = 3p/4 + 1200

 

p/4 = 1200

 

p = 4(1200) = 4800

 

price = $4800
