Let a = andy, j = juan, and s = Stephanie. here's what we know:
s = 3a + 7 (Steph as 7 more than 3 times Andy)
j = 5a - 9 (Juan has 9 less than 5 times Andy)
a + j + s = 70 (The three together collected 70 apples)
We have values for s and j, so we can put them into the equation:
a + (5a - 9) + (3a + 7) = 70
Combine like terms:
9a - 2 = 70
add 2 to both sides:
9a = 72
Divide by 9:
a = 8
