What is the general relationship that allows you to determine the ionic charge of elements in Groups 1A - 3A?

Elements in the 1st column of the periodic table "like" to loose 1 electron, so an element A become A+.
 
Elements in the 2nd column of the periodic table like to loose 2 electrons, so an element A become A++.
 
Elements in the 3rd column of the periodic table like to loose 3 electrons, so an element A become A+++.
