Let G be the number of Oranges, and A be the number of Apples. Then translate the statements as follows:
The number of oranges ... was ... three times as much as the number of apples
G = 3A (Eq 1)
She ordered 48 apples and oranges.
A + G = 48 (Eq 2)
By substituting G with 3A from Eq 1 into Eq 2, we get:
A + 3A = 48
4A = 48 (by combining like terms)
A = 12 (by dividing both sides by 4)
Then since G = 3A, we have that G = 36
Therefore Ms. Grant ordered 36 oranges (and 12 apples).
