Let amount Fuminhad had at first = y

 

x + y = 280                   eq1

 

 

Meiling has (1/2)x left.  Fuminhad has (3/4)y left.

 

(1/2)x = (3/4)y

 

 

Multiply both sides of the equation by 4.

 

2x = 3y                       eq2

 

 

Next, substitute eq1 into eq2 to get eq2 in terms of one variable.

 

2(280 - y) = 3y

 

 

Solving for y,

 

560 - 2y = 3y

 

560 = 5y

 

112 = y

 

 

This is how much Fuminhad original had.  Now take the difference between 280 and his amount to find Meiling's original amount.
