Setting up equation to solve a word problem

Natasha is 9 times Eric's age. In 10 years, the sum of their ages will be 50. What is Natasha's age now? Can you please explain how I would set up this equation...thank you

The way you have it set up shows that E will equal 3...9x3=27...but according to my answer sheet the answer is 36 so I'm still confused

36 is the answer that you would get if you set up the second equation as N+E+10=50 instead of N+E+20=50. Since both Natasha and Eric have aged 10 years, I will stand by my answer. Clearly your answer sheet doesn't agree though!

Really it's more important that you understand the concept here. As long as you have an equation that equals one of your variables (letters), you can replace that variable with whatever it is equal to. This is called substitution.
