Why does loose sugar dissolve much faster than a sugar cube?

Loose sugar has a greater surface area than a sugar cube. Think of loose sugar as a ton of tiny sugar cubes which are all exposed to the water, whereas a sugar cube just has its 6 sides exposed to the water.
