You are going up a mountain, at 1000 m it is 6 degrees. For every meter that you go up, it goes down 1 degree. What is the temperature at 2500m and at sea level?

"For every meter that you go up, it goes down 1 degree."
The "it" in your sentence should be the temperature. And as Mark points out, the word meter in this sentence should be one thousand meters.
