I’m not sure how to solve this

Question

in my Precalculus homework, the question is “There has to be a rectangular area of 1680 ft sq. for my pig. There is the wall of a barn for one side. How much fencing would you need to buy?” Yes that’s all of the information given.

 

Im confused on how to approach this. Can you help?

Since the area equals length x width, and perimeter equals twice length plus twice width, let the length of the barn wall (b) be length:

 

A = (b)(w)

w = A/b

w = 1680/b

P = 2(b) + 2(1680/b)

Fence = P - b = b + 3360/b

 

This will work for whatever the size of the barn wall is.
