Hi Necoe from Augusta, GA...have a great day at school.
Great question...I'm going to show you how you calculate these kind of problems. Once you have this skill, you will be a pro.
You do have to know a few things about the Metric System, which is not too complicated because it is based on 10.
1000 meters = 1 km
We set up solving your problem in the form of a ratio, like a fraction:
1000 meters
1 km
Your problem wants to know how many meters (m) are the same as 18km
So we put the problem into what we know:
1000 m = m Put the things you know
1 km 18 km across from one another
Then, cross multiply to solve for the unknown (m):
(1000 m)(18 km) = (1 km)( m )
Complete the multiplication operation:
18000 m•km = 1 km•m But we want to find meters (m)
So we divide by km:
18000 m•km = 1 km•m Now you can cancel out km
1 km 1 km make sure you know why
Now you are left with:
18,000 m = m
So your answer is 18,000 m are in 18 km
This is how you solve all these kinds of problems.
