Despite the similarities in DNA sequence corresponding to 'house-keeping' genes, all living organisms possess unique DNA sequences which may be used to identify them. On a forensic basis, for example, DNA extracted from a crime scene may be used to identify the perpetrator of the crime with a high level of certainty, based on specific DNA sequences which are unique to a particular individual.
