How many classes will they both take before each pay the same

At a local fitness center, members pay a $20 membership fee and $3 for each aerobic class. Nonmembers pay $5 each for each aerobics class. For what number of aerobics classes will the cost for members and nonmembers be the same?

20 + 3N = 5N

 

20 = 2N

 

N= 10

 

members pay 20 + 10*3 = 20 + 30 = 50 for 10 classes

non-members pay 5x10 = 50 for 10 classes

 

So the answers is that the cost will be the same for 10 classes.

 

For 11 classes, non-members pay 55 while members pay 20 + 3 *11 = 20 + 33 = 53.

 

So it's cheaper to join and become a member if you plan on doing 11 or more classes.
