How do I write out this equation?

A grocery shopper bought 6 lb. of steak and 20 lb. of ground beef. The steak cost $5/lb. more than the ground beef, and the total bill was $82. What was the price per pound for each type of meat?

cost = # of pounds x price.

 

B is the price of the ground beef.

The price of the steak is B+5 

 

cost of the steak + cost of the ground beef = 82

 

# pounds of steak * price of the steak  +   # of pounds of ground beef * price of ground beef = 82

 

 

         6   (B+5)                                    +             20   B        =     82

 

6(B+5) + 20B = 82

 

6B + 30 + 20B = 82

 

26B + 30 = 82

 

26B = 52

 

B = 2

 

The price of the ground beef is $2 per pound.

The price of the steak is $7 per pound

 

6 * 7 + 2 * 20 = 42 + 40 = 82
