The sea symbolizes life and the struggles that everyone has to experience. Santiago got the marlin (it was hidden from him by the sea) from the sea. He had to fight (struggle) to hold on to it. In life when something positive happens to you, you have to try very hard to hold on to it so that it does not slip away!
