Probably you meant to state the thickness of the book.
The answer to this problem depends on the sizes of all books, and which way they are to be placed on the shelf--upright or lying flat. So the problem is not really well (definitively) stated.
IF LYING FLAT IS THE WAY TO GO, and ALL BOOKS ARE LYING FLAT AND THEY'RE ALL 3/4" thick, then 48 books times 3/4" will take up 36 inches.
