This final ets question really threw me for a loop. Logically speaking the answer should be 6 + 1, but that was not listed as one of the answer choices. I guessed an answer and still got it wrong. What do you think? Can anyone show a viable solution set?

QUESTION

If you prefer to think about it logically rather than just cranking out an answer mechanically like I did, then if 6 inches represents d miles, then 1 mile would be 6/d inches on the map.  To convince yourself this is true, let d = 18 miles, then 6/d = (6 in)/18 mi) = (1/3) inch per mile.  So d+1 miles would be 6 + 6/d inches on the map.  I can convert it to the form in my answer as follows:

6 + 6/d = 6d/d + 6/d = (6d+6)/d = 6(d+1)/d
