How do I begin to answer this question? My work is shown below the solution set.

Question:
K is a set of 6 consecutive even integers. When the smallest 3 integers of set K are added together, the result is x. When the greatest three integers of set K are added together, the result is y. Which of the following is true?

Answer Options:
A. y= x-18

B. y= x+18 (correct answer)

C. y= 2x

D. y= 2x+4 (my answer- random guess)

E. y= 2x+6

My Work in finding solution:

a+b+c = x and d+e+f = y

That was more complicated than I expected and not sure I completely understand the answer. I have several days to figure it out, or otherwise I will skip that question if I see it on the exam.

Good Morning Mark,

I have some questions. Why are you adding whole numbers to "n"? I am thinking the problem is n+n+n. You wrote n, n+2, n+3....why?

Also, I where did you get the 18 from in the expression x(3n+6)+18?

Mark M.

even numbers are two apart, if the first even is n the next is n + 2
the 18 comes from: y (3n + 24) is 18 more than x (3n + 6)
this problem attempts to test your ability to juggle ideas with different symbols attached even thought they are the same.

Just saying thank you for your help. I passed all three of my Praxis exams and received the required score on the math. I am an older adult who is transitioning into a second career. I hadn't taken a math exam since graduate school and was never strong in math. Much appreciation for your help.
