a cable 84 meters long is cut into two piece  so that one piece is 18 meters longer than the other.

Let the length of first piece be x. That means length of another piece is x + 18 (as it is 18 meters longer than first piece).

 

hence, x + x + 18 = 84

2x + 18 = 84

2x + 18 - 18 = 84 - 18

2x = 66

2x / 2 = 66 /2

x = 33

x + 18 = 51

 

Hence, length of first piece is 33 meters and length of second piece is 51 meters

 

Check: 33 + 51 = 84; 51 - 33 = 18
